I think we never see the inside of the trailer in the movie ...all is played inside the spaceship itself , the mining ore is in the cargo and maybe separated from the ship itself .

The Nostromo was a commercial tug, towing a refinery.
While the refinery itself LOOKED like a gothic castle, the action took place on the tug itself.
Brett was killed in the landing gear bay. You can clearly see the alien, in one shot, motionless but swinging among the chains, between the claws of the landing gear. It's the first (and perhaps the best) clear look we get at the creature.

so the Nostromo really is what landed on lv426, not the entire refinery...that was just the shipping vessel being pulled by Nostromo.

Yep. Watch the scene in ALIEN where they disconnect from the "umbilicus" that attaches them to the refinery. Dallas declares "Okay, the money's safe. Let's take her down." By 'money' he is refferring to their cargo, the towed refinery.

My guess was the "automated" refinery is not habitable. The ship carrying the crew is.

Further to your answers, Ridley explains in the DVD commentary that Bret enters the chamber where the landing gear would emerge from (the big things are the feet of the Nostromo say I'm kinda drunk now lol) the water that he puts his head under is from the cooling towers that makes sure the landing gear doesn't overheat, which is probably another reason the Alien is in this area ie it's all nicey nicey for he.
