I think that particular remark in the TED speech has hidden connotations.
Could Weyland have gone through some unspeakable rite of passage to attain a certain level of existence or state?

Probably more like "no pain - no gain". Nothing worthwhile was ever accomplished without some mild discomfort. Not referring to some super secret Engineer hazing ritual, though.
