What Will We Do Without Prometheus???

I have had that thought as well and it kinda frightens me to think about it. Its such a fantastic piece of science fiction film. No one will ever, ever be able to do such an original work again. It started with Starbeast which became Alien and ended with another masterpiece, P R O M E T H E U S.

i stay here more than facebook,everyday I am here checking it for even 1 new comment on any subject and then engage in conversation with people ... hope every 2 year to make a movie prometheus...and release by fox

This has occurred to me too. It's a bit depressing. I'm not a forum dweller, I ve seen plenty while searching for information on this or that, and to a one they are sterile in format and often anywhere from crass to outright offensive. Anonymity brings out the worst in people. Then there's this site, and all of you. Totally different experience, and I find myself wondering who all of you are, where you're from, what you're doing, where you'll go. It's fascinating, an international community checking in daily, as I do too. I can recognize the source of many responses without reading the screen name. I too look here more often than Facebook. It's a source of some mirth for certain family and friends, this newfound ( or new level of) dorkiness, but I'm cool with that. You're a likable bunch. Me, I'll probably be the last one gone!

Im in here everyday and most nights. even if i rarely post or comment on a tread, im lurking around in the shadows, reading all the fantastic ideas, fanfictions, and theories you guys have. this site has taken up a lot of my time since i first found it last year. lets hope this goes on for at least a couple of years. its really up to us? right?

That's a good question Korpen but I just wonder when, if ever we will run out of things to analyze with our minds always processing new theories and rumors and the movie itself!!! Btw, I love the way you put it when you said, "..., im lurking around the shadows,..." it gave me a good laugh

Sometimes I wonder the same thing, but I personally prefer to enjoy the moment. And regarding the question of Korpen, well, I think the issue depends on the fans. Plus there will always be new generations. Also we all have our lives then who knows; what is important now not be as important in the future. However in other places people can take centuries debating about this and other franchises. BUT I must say that I had never found a place as friendly as this :), since in other sites is not the same thing.

Before Alien we marveled at Star Wars and before that we were awed by Close Encounters and before that we were thrilled by 2001: A Space Odyssey and before that .... you get the picture. There will ALWAYS be something to grab our attention especially now with the latest developments in CGI where it is almost impossible to tell "real" scenery from CGI scenery.

OldGuy-it's funny you listed almost all the top sci fi films I can think of, at least in terms of motion picture "Events". But the thing is they're rare, really great examples of science fiction are few and far between, and Ridleys Prometheus is quite exceptional unto itself. To put it in perspective, and I don't want to come off maudlin, but I saw 2001 with my dad when it came out, I was like 7 or 8 years old ( it scared the shit out of me ) and I saw Alien with him too, and we loved both those films. He passed away some time ago, and missed Prometheus. Movies like this don't happen often enough, and while I acknowledge the quality of some American sci fi, I think the British stuff is better, and its even harder to come by. I've always been more partial to British, and European artists in general, visual or musical. How I roll. :D

Yeah them white folks in Europe got crazy imagination and I think its because they had to deal with crazy batshite politics. Thats how they were probably able to escape reality and have entertainment. I like Dr. Who alot and some H.P. Lovecraft eventhough I really havent heard of him until last year but I like his stuff.

American Sci Fi is pretty bad sometimes haha. the channels on cox cable channel 45 is the syfy channel(which I assume is pretty well known by some of us here at least) and that is the prime example of a lot of bad movies. Sometimes good examples of good ideas gone wrong. Have you ever seen War of the Worlds 2? Well I really wish I didn't watch the first few minutes I did.

We all hope for the next great sci fi epic, but if you're looking for it on syfy channel I'm afraid you're bound to be disappointed. I consider their "original" movies to be the modern day equivalents of the "big bug" movies I wasted so many rainy days watching on tv as a child. Prometheus at least gave us alot to think about concerning our universe as do the true space epics. If nothing else comes along I suggest we pull up a comfy chair and pour over some of those curious old volumes of forgotten lore. Btw annunaki, lovecraft was an american but would not at all have been offended if you thought him british.

LOL I was making conversation that was a little off topic with the syfy channel. In no way do I ever(99% sure) that that, fairly sad channel will produce any, let alone next, great scifi epic. Sorry for that confusion haha. I think scifi, which seems to be garnering a bit more interest from movie makers now( and for a few years) than usual so there is going to be a lot of oppurtunities to get that next great one. god I hope paradise is that movie haha

I got sucked in to this community over a year ago before the movie came out. And then it came out and I hated it. I'm only still here because I find everyone's misguided attempts at sounding smart while they try to deconstruct this movie hilarious.

Xenotron - Dont say things like that common just because YOU hated the movie doesnt mean you have bring others down with YOUR OPINION. I mean no offense to you at all but dont underestimate someones intelligence because they like it. In fact you wrote so little anyway so we dont know what a "misguided attempt" that you have concerning why YOU didn't like it.

We come to this forum to enjoy and discuss the movie and not to bitch about how some guy didnt like Prometheus so he has to tell us why and how he was disappointed with it. To me its the concept thats also cool and the whole ancient race of beings traveling the stars seeding life in certain planets.

I've been accused of being a bit snide at times but jeeze Xenotron, that was just mean spirited. Not everyone here is misguided in their attempts to deconstruct Prometheus! Ridely Scott movies always lend themselves to analysis and thats what I always enjoyed about them. This site is devoted to people sharing their ideas - at all levels, about Prometheus and other Alien franchise movies. Your input was only to criticize these people without 'lowering' yourself to contribute your own ideas about these movies such as why you didn't like Prometheus. If you have something novel to say then I would be interested in hearing it.

I'm sorry if my views offend you, but it's obvious to me when the creators of a film are stringing you along and I think it's sick. Prometheus was a carrot on a stick; the only difference is that I realize who's riding me while I chase the carrot, so I stopped chasing the carrot. I'd say the biggest problem with the movie (and notice that the following is completely separate from the famous plot-holes) is that it wanted to be a space adventure film along the lines of the 2009 Star Trek. It's great-looking and flashy, but tonally, it was all wrong. When I say "tone" I mean that there was no sense of paranoia or unease like the movie that it rode the coat-tails of: Alien. It reminds me of when a classic rock band from the 80's comes back in 2013 with a new song. Your nostalgia compels you to listen to their new song, but the whole time, you wish it was like the songs that you love them for. Go back and watch Alien and Prometheus back-to-back and ask yourself why people still regard Alien so highly even today. The soundtrack even sounds like a space adventure film rather than a sci-fi horror. The problem is that the movie tried to be both a space adventure and a sci-fi horror and didn't commit to either so both aspects were lacking. This is yet another artistic (not logical or scientific) reason why Prometheus failed in delivering it's message. To this, I'm sure you'll say, "Well if you hate the movie so much, why are you here? Just leave us alone!" To that, I would say that I enjoy the mental exercise of debate. Prometheus is one of those contentious things that fall outside the realm of politics and religion (the latter barely so) and into the realm of art. I enjoy studying art and criticizing art in all of it's forms, especially movies.

Xenotron, your feelings about Prometheus are not offensive. Have at it, dude! But the comment you failed to mention, " misguided attempts at sounding smart", was [i]deliberately[/i]offensive. Happily, people here seem secure enough in themselves to not take the bait. Meaning, to insult you back. Obviously I really liked Prometheus. I'm glad it was made. And you're right, it is significantly different from Alien in tone. It's a different film. The term reboot keeps coming up and that's definitely what it is, a new take on an old idea. A very old idea. Rather than regurgitate a thoroughly explored premise, RS was kind enough to provide a new one. There's no win to be had, its either piss off one camp or the other, and if a mistake was made it was trying to make everyone happy. As for being strung along, that's maybe one way to look at it. The feeling I get is they want to tell a much longer story than can be wedged into 2 hours, so Prometheus is a sort of lighting of the fuse. Also, the whole package is somewhat a victim of commerce. A smaller, less expensive film may have gone further to satisfy you. But this mega blockbuster sort of tent pole thing can't help but suffer from too many cooks. With calculators. All that said, I found it to be the hugest, spookiest blockbuster ever. It's very tone is a source of dread, including the score, which yes conveyed a sense of adventure and discovery, with a moaning undercurrent of hopeless doom. Look at these silly humans, dwarfed by realities beyond their comprehension. The only one with any chance is not even alive. This was not a monster story, and RS was pretty explicit about that long before its release. Or, at least, the monster of the story wasn't gooey and toothy. The monster was David, and David [i]was[/i] scary, in a subtle, complex way. His villainy is hard to define. He's a machine. He's been programmed. He's disturbing and I think one of the great film sociopaths. And, with luck, all this is just the beginning.

We all have our different views which is why this forum is around. Although we do agree on a lot, it's obvious that we do disagree as well. You should never not speak your opinion, just be mindful of how it should be worded and what not. That's all. And according to what s going on with the movies itself, by the time Lindelof came in and re-wrote it, they were going for something way different from Alien. Even though Ridley originally wanted to scare the shit out of us, he decided to change that. Although I think they went too far with the mystery and not scaring us, but there is no way to change this movie now. We can only hope for a better composed sequel

Major Noob is correct, it was that statement " misguided attempts at sounding smart" that was really over the top and your subsequent post was a lot more tame so I give you credit for that. Have you watched 'The Furious Gods"? That documentary really helps the viewer to understand what Ridley Scott and all those departments that were working together to produce this movie were trying to accomplish, and it was a lot to take on. Really more than could be fit into one movie and I have always felt that Prometheus was too short. With the great aesthetic beauty of it I could have easily sat through much more. But then I am an artist and Ridley Scott's movies have much to contribute on a visual level. The over all point here is that we continue to add our opinions here not because of the studio or some nefarious plan thereof, but because this movie lends itself to analysis and I have read some good critiques here covering both the good aspects and the pot holes. I learned a lot as well about Alien and its sequels here. It says alot about these movies that we the fans are willing to continue to come here and share our ideas about the movies months or years after their release. This does not happen with the majority of movies out there...

I still haven't seen the blu ray extra features nostromo :( no blu ray player in my house hold, uinfortunately. one day though
